Old is Gold – Mules and Mud Houses

old-is-gold

Even though Egypt is one of the top 15 busiest countries in the world, not much has changed here. Unlike Cairo, the small towns of Egypt are still having a difficult time developing and keeping up with the modernised city. The grounds of many Middle East countries are laden with oil and petrol is very cheap here but still folks here are still using mules to transport huge bulks of green produces and sacks of rice from one point to another. They are still using the old methods to get a large number of things done around here and they do not mind it.

In the face of all the changes and modernity everywhere in major cities of the country and the world, there are still some things that the folks here in the small cities would not like to change even if they had the means to do so. Like the earthen drinking clay pots, mud huts are still a common sight even in the capitalised city. Using earth to make a home is a method used by our forefathers, thousands of years ago and it is still a preferred choice over cemented house because it is inexpensive and the greatest advantage is its energy efficiency. Mud buildings have high thermal mass and can store heat and release it slowly to balance indoor climates besides the fact they make a rodent-free and insect-free house.

I find Egypt to be quite the environmental friendly country minus the crazy traffic in Cairo. Although, I would not encourage anyone to use a mule for transportation or to live in a mud house just to save our planet.
