CLASSIC LIFESTYLE OF LIBERIA

On 3rd, October after leaving Nifu, Travelling was tough in Liberia and the day was no different. I crossed 4 different canals and it was very tough with my bicycle. I passed through sand and I had to push my bicycle in sand for 3 hours to find another place with people.CLASSIC LIFESTYLE OF LIBERIA

I got a chance to see a different side of people’s life in the place I was going to settle for that day- Krngwalli.

You might have only heard of a traditional way of community where there would be a chief of town and everyone would follow his decisions and instructions. Everything the chief says is a rule and his instructions are laws to abide.

Krngwalli was the place I just explained.CLASSIC LIFESTYLE OF LIBERIA1

In a small village, I was invited to be the guest of the village, to the chief of the village. The tiresome day turned out to be a happy day for me. I was the guest of honor for the village along with my bicycle, lot of baggage and flags in front of the bicycle in which one was in the front representing Liberia too.CLASSIC LIFESTYLE OF LIBERIA2

Around 60 villagers gathered in the house to know about the strange man on 2 wheels (I assume I was strange for the villagers as the way they talked with me and treated me was different).

I shared about a country thousands of miles away- Nepal, and tried to share the reason I was on the road with the hope to share the message of peace and the request to protect our mother earth

The night, I was allocated a nice room in the house. I was so tired with the journey and soon felt asleep.

Early morning when I woke up, I found some kids outside of the room sleeping in the ground. Later I came to know that the room I was in belonged to 4 kids of the 11 kids in the house.

I felt bad for myself occupying the kids’ place. It was not good feeling to overtake their places, albeit I expressed my deepest gratitude for the respect the village and the family had given to a complete stranger.

For those, who think Africa is completely dark, I guess it would be an example that it is actually not.

Next day (4th October), The chief ordered some villagers to drop me off to Kabala from where I would be safe and I was expected to find a proper way to Monrovia. Villagers with me, the chief said I was provided with security for 6 hours of the journey in the middle of jungle as it was a jungle with carnivores.

I waved goodbye to the village of Krngwalli and the villagers thanking them for the hospitality and along with some of the villagers I started walking in the middle of the jungle. Going ahead, with villagers all of which were carrying small weapons I realized why the chief had sent me with someone. The terrifying jungle was for 6 hours of walk and vast. I am sure, I would barely come out of the jungle.

There were 5 more canals on the way and some trees fallen on the way slowing our journey where I needed to carry bicycle. After getting through so many canals, crossing through canal was no more interesting.

Kabala was similar to Krngwalli and people there too were curious to know about me. I guess the village was a little bigger because about 120 people gathered in chief’s house to know about me and I had a chance to share about me, my objective and my experiences to villagers once again.CLASSIC LIFESTYLE OF LIBERIA7

The night, it was raining heavily outside and I was wondering how I could move ahead in such a tough road, the next day thinking which, I felt asleep.
